The Swiss education system is characterised by a high degree of flexibility. There are many ways to begin or to change to a different education programme. Applicants with the required qualifications can generally attend their chosen course.
In Switzerland a great value is given to education therefore the Federal Government and the Cantons offer a comprehensive public education which is completely or almost free for pupils and students. Intensive use is made of this facility and only an exceptionally small percentage of the Swiss population attend initial education, or a part of it, at private schools.
The Swiss education system is to a large extent a cantonal matter, therefore extremely varied and complex.
On the following pages, we also give you a brief overview of the main educational opportunities in Switzerland and general information.
